15th November 2010                     

 

Lost Railways of Nottinghamshire - David Amos

 

David Amos focused on the effects of of the Beeching cuts in the 1960’s in the Nottingham area  showing pictures of the Great Central Line and the large number of stations that were closed on the Erewash Valley and Robin Hood lines .

Stanton, Gone but not Forgotten - Stephen Flinders

Stanton’s street furniture of man hole covers and lamp posts are seen everywhere, the company was the first in the UK to develop the 'spun pipe' process and has produced other varied products including locomotive wheels and cast-iron tunnel segments used in the construction of the London Underground and the Mersey Tunnel.

 

Stephen explained ‘the 200 feet high furnaces were cathedrals of industry, producing a bright orange glow when they were tapped (releasing the iron) that could be seen from miles away’.

Bramcote - A Centre of Commerce? - Val Bird assisted by Anne Clarke, Ann Gray and Jill Ward.

 

A presentation on of some of the shops and businesses that used to thrive in Bramcote. This is an ongoing project for the History Group and a booklet on it will be published in the Autumn.

21st March 2011                     

 

History of Notts. County Football Club - Colin Slater, the Nottingham sports journalist

 

Colin spoke about the founding and development of the club drawing attention to the part played by Frederic Chatfield Smith of Bramcote Hall. He then went on to share his personal experiences with the club giving a fascinating insight into the successes and failures of Notts. County from the 1960’s to the present day.

 

140 members and guests attended the meeting.

 

18th April 2011                     

 

The Lost Country Houses of Nottinghamshire - Philip Jones

 

Philip who has written a book “The Lost Country Houses of Nottinghamshire” outlined the reasons for the demise of Nottinghamshire’s country houses during 20th Century  - taxation and changes in regulations regarding historic houses. He then spoke spoke about a number of houses that are no longer standing -  Clumber, Rufford and lesser known ones including Owthorpe Hall, Broxtowe Hall, and Watnall Hall.

The other home of the Sherwin-Gregorys of Bramcote Hills House.

An excellent tour round this hidden gem with guides provided the  owners , The University of Evansville, Indiana, USA.

How Thomas Cook developed tourism.

78 members enjoyed Danny Wells describing how Thomas Cook  started his business, his guiding principles  and how he and his family ran it until it was taken over by Wagon Lits in the 20thC.

Starting at the White Lion 36 people had an enjoyable afternoon being guided round the historical buildings in the centre of Bramcote.

25 members enjoyed an interesting and informative guided tour of historical sites in Stapleford led by Barbara Brooke, the Chairman of Stapleford and District Local History Society.

The Chilwell Ghost House

Our local author, Alan Dance, unravelled the mystery of the Chilwell Ghost House. Alan described how he searched census records and 19th Century editions of local newspapers to put together a story of murder and intrigue.

Stephen Flinders excellent story of Stanton Iron Works was received enthusiastically by over 100 people at the groups January meeting.

 

The three square mile site used to employ 10,000 people and Stephen started work at Stanton in 1972 as an apprentice joiner describing the iron works being ‘in the blood as the site could be heard and seen 24 hours a day’.

 

The iron works was established in 1846 with the last pipe being produced in May 2007, the talk was packed with pictures of the furnaces in use, the social activities at the site including a tug of war team and contrasts of health and safety practices today and in the past.

Stephen Flinders

David, a retired Nottinghamshire Fire Officer, gave an excellent talk about the effects of bombing in Nottingham in WW2. He talked about the development of the provision of fire and rescue services and showed examples of the devastation caused by the bombing. His slides were particularly interesting as he was able to compare photographs of properties when damaged in the 1940’s and what they look like now.
